EQUALIZATION Boon Chong Ng David Gesbert Arogyswami Paulraj Information Systems Laboratory Dept. of Electrical Engineering Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. ABSTRACT This paper describes a direct equalization approach for channels with some underlying structure. A semi-blind approach is taken here where a small amount of training symbols is available. A family of MMSE equalizers is obtained that includes some prior information about the channel structure. The channel structure assumed in this paper is that the channel vector lies approximately in the subspace of a matrix associated with the samples of the transmit pulse shape. Blind identi ability issues of the structured equalizer are also addressed. Numerical results using experimental indoor channel data indicate that these structured equalizers can achieve bit error rates that are signi cantly lower than traditional non-blind MMSE equalizers.

A Max-Min Approach to Channel Shortening in OFDM Systems
In OFDM systems, residual inter-block interference can be suppressed by a time-domain equalizer that blindly shortens the effective length of a channel impulse response. To further improve the performance of blind equalizers, we propose a channel shortening method that attempts to maximize the minimum FFT output power over data subcarriers. Simulation results indicate that the max-min strategy ...
متن کاملSemi-Blind Equalization for OFDM using Space-Time Block Coding and Channel Shortening
Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications has become a stalwart in high speed communication systems. By using multiple antennas along with space-time coding, one can leverage spatial diversity gain, or multiple propagation paths, for transmitted signals. This in turn can improve reliability in communication systems. Channel shortening is necessary when the channel impulse response is...
متن کاملOrthogonal sequences based multi-CFO estimation and semi-blind ICA based equalization for multiuser comp systems
We propose a low-complexity carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation approach and an independent component analysis (ICA) based semi-blind equalization structure for the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based multiuser coordinated multi-point (CoMP) systems. A group of orthogonal sequences are employed to enable separation and simultaneous estimation of multiple CFOs at base s...
متن کاملPer-tone equalization for MIMO-OFDM systems
This paper focuses on Multiple-Input MultipleOutput (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems, where the MIMO channel order is larger than the length of the Cyclic Prefix (CP). By swapping the filtering operations of the MIMO channel and the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), it is shown that each tone of a MIMO OFDM system can be viewed as a MIMO Single-Carrier (SC) system. A...
متن کاملSemi-blind Channel Identification and Equalization in Ofdm: an Expectation-maximization Approach
This work proposes an expectation-maximization approach to channel identification and equalization in OFDM. The algorithm exploits the natural constraints imposed by the channel (sparsity, maximum delay spread, and a priori statistical information) and those imposed by the transmitter (pilots, cyclic prefix, and the finite alphabet constraint). These constraints are used to reduce the number of...
